Behavior Management at it’s Best: Getting on the Plus Side

This workshop targets the leaders of children who struggle, whether they are parents, staff, teachers, therapeutic caregivers, clinicians, counselors, therapists, or psychologists.

Many aspects of human experience and needs are universal. This one-day face-to-face training boils it down yet keeps it entertaining, practical, memorable, easy to implement, and extremely motivating. Working with tough kids can be emotionally and energetically draining. When we get drained, frustrated, and unpleasantly surprised by recurring problem behaviors and outbursts, we tend to default to automatic reactions that are judging, critical, and punitive. These kind of reactions do not help kids who are already struggling. Actually, they make things worse.

When properly motivated, people can overcome all kinds of obstacles. You don’t know and you may be surprised at how fast this can happen.

Understand and implement the best ideas about behavior that science and art have to offer. Get specific strategies to use with children who do not respond well to traditional/conventional discipline strategies. Take away a list of strategies and rewards that are free and easy to give in any setting.

Most importantly, the strategies and philosophy of children taught will build the right kind of relationship and attachment rather than tear it down. Dramatic case studies and stories keep the audience engaged at an emotional level, active participation, questions, and challenges are encouraged.

Your Dream Book: Clarify goals and desires, making wishes come true, and inspiring internal motivation

BookCoverImage

Everybody can get frustrated by mundane, repetitive activities, developing inertia, procrastination, and a poor attitude. It happens to kids in school, like those bright somewhat ADD kids who turn 15 and either put everything off until the very last minute, or want to give up and check out entirely. It happens to teachers, administrators, business executives, middle managers. It can happen to anyone.

This workshop, like the book, was designed for use and access by both older children and adults.

How do you teach someone to set goals, create a vision to pursue, to have passion, to care, and to get excitedly busy making it happen? How do you make market calls or data entry a task to invest in, make homework seem relevant and meaningful? What gives a destination and puts wind in the sails for a person who has no wind in their sail nor a compass to steer by?

Do you ever feel stuck in a rut? Would you like to go to work inspired and motivated more often? Use this special workshop to rekindle your passion, learn how to motivate your kids and your employees, and to connect with them in a very real way. Get clear on what you want and why you do what you do, and build your joyful resilience.

What will participants do?

    • Start creating dreams, goals and wishes for themselves
    • Go home, choose & print images to represent their dreams and put into their dream book
    • Learn about the importance of habits and rituals
    • Make focusing attention on what they want to create and experience a regular practice, using their dream book as both stimuli and reminder
    • Cross-share dreams, between parents and children, boss and employees, teachers and students, creating collaborative opportunities to establish themselves as someone who helps make others’ dreams come true
    • Learn the importance of watching thoughts carefully, replacing the negative, untrue, extreme, and unwanted forms of thought with those more accurate and encouraging
    • Recognize their own patterns of thoughts and beliefs that keep them stuck, create obstacles, and prevent them from feeling and acting the way they wish
    • Practice a technique to program and harness the power of the subconscious
    • Recieve reproducible forms and the Mindgarden Mini-Course
    • Developing resilience to setbacks, frustrations, teasing, and bullying
    • Understand the power of stories, metaphors, and hero’s journeys: how they inform us in how to feel, think, and behave
    • Become able to use stories with others, modifying existing stories and creating new ones to assist in overcoming obstacles and creating new patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions

The Struggle of the Gifted and Twice Exceptional Child

It’s hard to watch someone you know has great capabilities be misunderstood, frustrated, fail to apply themselves, or self-sabotage.

Gifted children can really stretch the limits of their caregivers. If they are so smart, then why don’t they do well at pretty much everything? They can have such emotional extremes, be socially inept, and why can’t they clean their own room or remember to turn in their homework? Find out about the clues that a child is gifted, what asynchronous development means, and what the five forms of emotional and intellectual intensity that gifted children can display.

Gifted children can be exhausting, emotionally intense, socially off, and often fail to get identified. They can be misdiagnosed with ADHD, OCD, Bipolar, Asperger Syndrome. Or what if, in the case of the twice exceptional child (2e) they are both gifted and have ADHD, Dyslexia, or Autism Spectrum Disorder? Imagine the child that is gifted enough that nobody realizes they are dyslexic, and dyslexic enough that nobody recognizes they are gifted? This can create a great deal of frustration for parents, students, and teachers. Learn how to identify and care for these special people from an early age.

Learning Objectives

      • Discover techniques for evaluating unique individual profiles of strengths and weaknesses without using diagnostic categories.
      • Participants will be able to implement compensatory and remedial strategies to address areas of poor functioning by teaching skills and creating accommodations.
      • Appreciate, celebrate, and facilitate development of special interests and abilities.
      • Develop a realistic model of intelligence and giftedness based on science rather than ideals.
      • Hone the skills necessary to know the difference between poor choices, lack of motivation, and poorly developed neurologically based thinking skills.
      • Make appropriate adjustments to expectations and create individual educational plans that allow students to be successful.
      • Take home ways to discover and create internal motivation for underachievers.
      • Accept rather than criticize and condemn students as they are, creating relationships that make them feel valued, in this context these students can have optimal learning outcomes.
      • Realize not all gifted students have good behavior or make good grades, appreciate how being gifted is not always a “gift,” they can have their own challenges integrating and adjusting.

Learn how to respond in a way that provides empathy while also indicating to the child that the adult ultimately can not change the way the child feels- the child will have to do something besides avoiding the situation they fear if they want to begin feeling more the way they want to. Anxious kids usually want to make the people or environment give them what they want or remove a demand they fear, so at some point they usually will need some help with accountability to encourage them to experiment with actually using their coping strategies instead of using avoidance and extreme behaviors to manipulate others.
